Rong Chhon’s Eye Condition Needs Surgery

Phnom Penh: Border activist Mr. Rong Chhun was sent for a check-up for his eyes at the Khmer Soviet friendship Hospital as he was worried that his eye condition was getting worse.

Directorate general of prison’s spokesperson Mr. Nouth Savna told EAC News that Mr. Rong Chhun was sent to hospital last Saturday after he complained that the sight in his right eye was deteriorating.
He adds, that after the checkup, the doctor decided that surgery was needed to prevent it spreading to the left eye but they have not confirmed the date yet.
He said: ‘we also worry about his condition. We don’t want him to be like this for too long.’​ 

Rong Chhun’s Nephew, Mr. Rong Vichea, also said Mr. Rong Chhun eyes have had problems for many years. He needs a checkup every year, but during the time of detention his eye condition is getting worse and makes the family very worried about him.

He says: ‘I worry about him. I believe the government will temporary release for him to recheck his health.’
Mr. Rong Chhun was arrested in August 2020 after he released an announcement about land conflict of 106 families with Vietnam in Tropang Plong commune, Ponhak krek district, Tbong khmom province.
He was sentenced to 2 year in prison for “inciting serious social unrest”. Following the decision, his lawyer appealed to the Court of Appeal, saying they could not accept the decision.
